Amongst the rest of the characters from The Breakfast Club, the criminal, the athlete, the basket case and the brain, is "the princess".
Claire Standish's is the popular, up herself, rich teenage girl. Claire claims that she isn't who she acts to be at school and she proves that by being loyal to the other members of The Breakfast Club. Claire’s parents are divorced and from this she is often used as a weapon by each of them to get back at the other. The way she is treated at home effects her thoughts and feelings about her self-worth which leads to her seeking approval from others.
Claire is somewhat restrained and seemingly shy with information about herself.
Claire also suffers from a strong sense of insecurity, which is noticeable buy the way she lashes out at John Bender so often;
While in detention Claire transforms Alison so her hairs out of her face, she's not wearing all black and she doesn't have dark makeup on her eyes.
"You know you really do look a lot better without all that black shit on your eyes... " "Hey...I like that black shit..." "This looks a lot better..." |
The popular teen of the group, in detention for skipping class to go to the mall is something a typical wealthy girl would do. We know she comes from a rich family because of the smart comments Bender throws at her and through the symbolic techniques used throughout the film. For example her Dad's car is of a high class model and he even wears a designer brand scarf, symbolically emphasising the family's wealth.
She is snobby and stuck up and admits to not having the desire to hang out with anyone who is not popular. But she later admits she feels pressured by her friends and thats why she is who she is. "I hate it. I hate going along with everything my friends say." |
